2 A less attractive side of the history of Britain’s railways under public ownership was the 1963 Beeching Report. Appointed as chair of the British Railways Board by the MacMillan Tory government, Richard Beeching instigated the closure of more than a third of the rail network, deeming lines ‘unprofitable’ by using commercial criteria that were not applied to the road system.

4 The Thatcher government sold off British Telecom, British Airways, Rolls-Royce, British Airports Authority, British Gas, British Steel and the water and electricity industries. The privatisation of British Gas in 1986 was promoted by the ‘Tell Sid’ TV advertising campaign to encourage the public to buy shares. Most of the shares were soon mopped up by institutional investors, and what was British Gas has now been broken up into Centrica, BG Group, and National Grid.
